Newport is a city in Northern Kentucky, at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers. Settled about 1791, Newport was incorporated as a town in 1795 and in 1850 received a city charter. Newport is part of the Greater Cincinnati, Ohio Metro Area, which comprises over 2 million inhabitants. At one time the area was served by ferry service across the Ohio River until the completion of the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge (prototype of the famous Brooklyn Bridge) in 1866, whereupon land values in the areas near the river quadrupled overnight.
Beginning in the 1970s, many factors combined to create major growth. The proximity to Cincinnati, the completion of I-75, the nexus of rail service and river traffic, creation of several industrial parks, and the growth of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport drew many industries into the area. Its geographically central location (within 800 miles of 80% of the US population) makes it ideal for distribution centers, and those shipping all over the country.
Newport at one time had the reputation of being known as “Sin-City,” due to its upscale gambling casinos, and adult entertainment clubs primarily on Monmouth Street. The 1980s and 1990s, Newport began redeveloping its riverfront to focus on family-friendly attractions. Attractions such as Newport Aquarium and Newport on the Levee Entertainment complex would begin to replace Newport’s racy and checkered past. Today, Newport is quickly becoming the entertainment community of the Greater Cincinnati- Northern Kentucky area.
